The contractor for the Semer Road, BTW, was Tunas Jaya. They've done a lot of surprisingly competent work lately in Bali. What a relief, what a rarity. Bravo Tunas Jaya.

Actually, the road construction in Semer was excellent, and is holding up admirably. One of the best road construction projects I've seen in Bali, and one of the quickest, too.

The sidewalks seem to have been handled by a separate subcontractor. The designs seem fine, but the materials and workmanship (which I watched day by day), look not quite up to snuff.

The good news is that so far, even with bouts of heavy rain, their "new style" drainage system seems to be working OK. No major floods, no evident erosion of the road.

Shame about the sidewalks, but nobody in Semer ever walks, they all have motorbikes, which they ride recklessly with no helmets, even if it's only to go 30 meters to the warung to buy a sachet of shampoo and a pack of cigarettes.

Building flyovers to cope with the hideous traffic?

Frightening thought for a place that can't even build a sidewalk.

For months last year residents of Banjar Semer in Kerobokan were inconvenienced by the desultory construction of guttering and a raised sidewalk the length of the main road; barely three months later the kerbing is crumbling in places and the paving stones are lifting and cracking.

What next? A nuclear power station at Serangan to cope with the grossly inadequate electrical supply?
